The male-oriented hero’s journey has held sway in the realm of storytelling for decades. I believe there exists a parallel model with remarkable distinctions and equally powerful messages. The heroine’s powerful archetype provides a model for breaking gender roles, while simultaneously saving the world (in small or epic ways). A labyrinth, remember, is a human-made structure that allows freedom of movement, yet is designed to keep its inhabitants captive. Far from an outward journey, the heroine’s dangers are often closer to home.
